The Trustworthy Builder
The most valuable quality a builder can have is being trustworthy.

The most valuable quality a builder can have is being trustworthy.  Especially in todays market when there is so much uncertainty about the stability of the current construction industry.  I believe having the quality of being trustworthy is something that is ingrained in someone from a young age up to adulthood, therefore you either are or aren’t, with very few grey areas in between.  Assuming your builder is someone that is trustworthy, it is still a quality that must be earned when is comes to the general public’s and building industry’s perception of the particular builder.

For those in search of a builder there are just a few, but very critical, steps that one can take to determine if their builder of choice has this valuable quality.

1)      Ask for 2 or 3 homeowner references.  Not only past clients, but current in-construction homeowners.  These 2 or 3 phone calls are more than likely going to be the best calls you make.

2)      What are the builder’s credentials and affiliations?  Are they a Registered Master Builder (RMB), belong to the Building Contractors Association (BCA) or the Better Business Bureau (BBB)?  How about a 100% ENERGY STAR builder?  Digging into these affiliations will tell you a lot about a builders financial background, insurance coverage, past complaints, dedication to energy efficiency, and sub-contractor and vendor references, amongst a variety of other important credibility’s.

3)      Just being a member and blogger of www.buildingcredibility.com shows a lot of character and the ability to be trussed.  Just think about the hundreds of builders in the valley, in which only a hand full are members and only two, Chuck Miller and Flynner, are bloggers.  Chuck and I expose ourselves to a world where anyone can comment, both positive and negative, with no control over the comments the reader’s post.  This takes a lot of character (also known as guts or balls!).  This is also an excellent indicator of trustworthiness because some homeowner would have called our bluff by now.
